Each year the TonaLaw awards the Annual Veteran’s Scholarship to an extraordinary individual who has served our country. This year we are proud to award the TonaLaw Veteran’s Scholarship to Jennifer Holmes.
Ms. Holmes enlisted in the Navy in May of 2001, shortly before the September 11 attacks shocked the country. Determined to pursue her dreams of higher education, she joined the navy to pay for college. Although, in the end, Ms. Holmes gained much more than a college degree.
When asked about what she’s gained from her experience in the Navy, Ms. Holmes stated “Little did I know that one experience would teach me that one person can make a big difference and the knowledge and skills I possessed were vital to the mission at hand.” During her service, Ms. Holmes had the opportunity to take chances both to explore who she was and who she wanted to become.
While on deployment in Africa, Ms. Holmes earned her associate degree in Business through Florida College at Jacksonville. Since then, Ms. Holmes has earned her bachelor’s degree in General Studies with a minor in Business and Human Resources. In addition, she earned her human resource certified professional certification (SHRM-CP) through the Society of Human Resources Management at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Ms. Holmes credits her service in the Navy with giving her the confidence that has helped her overcome adversity in both her personal and professional life. When asked what advice she would give to her younger self, she stated that she would tell herself “You are capable, you are worth it, you are valuable.” We could not agree more!
Ms. Holmes continues to make a difference in her community and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Business Administration. One day she aspires to use her education and experience to work at the executive level whether it is at work or within the Tennessee State Guard.
All of us at TonaLaw wish you the best of luck Jennifer, and we look forward to see what other amazing things you accomplish.
