A Brooklyn couple will face a judge today, April 5th, 2018, following a five-car pileup that killed two people and injured seven more on the Nassau Expressway in Lawrence on Wednesday, April 4th, 2018.
Zakiyyah Steward, 25, and Rahmel Watkins, 35, were allegedly “driving high and drunk when they caused the chain reaction crash” on Wednesday morning. Steward is charged with driving while ability impaired by the combined influence of drugs and alcohol, DWI and unlawful possession of marijuana. Watkins is charged with DWI. It is also reported that they were drag racing.
According to the online publication The Yeshiva World, the fatal victims of the crash are a young engaged couple, Yisroel Levin and Elisheva Kaplan.
Unfortunately, deadly DWI accidents happen frequently in New York and Long Island. It is important to know what your rights are as victim or family member of a deceased person from a DWI crash. You have a right to hire an attorney to represent your family in a wrongful death claim. It is the job of the personal injury lawyer to establish liability and damages on behalf of the Levin and Kaplan families.
Damages, in this case, would include loss of life. What attorneys like ourselves would pursue from there would be establishing liability on Watkins for causing the deaths of Mr. Levin and Ms. Kaplan, through examining police reports, eye-witness testimony, and additional evidence related to the accident.
Lastly, it is very important to determine what insurance coverage is available and what the policies include. This is all within the scope of the valuable work that a personal injury law firm does. Discovering all aspects of potential insurance policies in existence is our job.
DWIs, as well as drag racing illegally, are serious offenses, and if you or a loved one is a victim of a wrongful injury or death, TonaLaw can help.
