YESTERDAY, April 8th: A bus carrying a group of high-school students who had just returned from a spring break trip to Europe slammed into an overpass on a Long Island highway Sunday night, leaving the roof torn off and seriously injuring two people, state police said (source: https://nypost.com/2018/04/08/bus-crashes-on-highway-in-long-island/)
It is reported that the driver of this bus did not know that there is a height limit on our Long Island, NY parkways. Newsday reported there were 38 students and five chaperones on the bus that crashed into a Southern State Parkway overpass, injuring six of the passengers seriously and leaving 37 with minor injuries. The fact that there were no fatalities and only injuries is extremely fortunate in this case. It could have been much worse. Injured students, ranging in age from 16 to 18, were returning from a spring break trip to Europe. Several are from Huntington High School.
UPDATE: Police have announced that this Bus driver was using ‘noncommercial’ GPS – this could be an instance of gross negligence (a conscious and voluntary disregard of the need to use reasonable care, which is likely to cause foreseeable grave injury or harm to persons, property, or both). Especially if the driver was instructed and trained to use the commercial GPS system.
