FDA Issues Recall & Warning After Deadly Chemicals Found in Hand Sanitizer
Starting on June 19, 2020, the FDA issued warnings to U.S. consumers to avoid certain hand sanitizer products that have been contaminated with methanol and 1-propanol. These products have been recalled, but many have found their way into homes and some can still be found upon the shelf.
Methanol Poisoning from Hand Sanitizer
Ingestion of methanol can cause blindness, hospitalizations, and death. The FDA also states that “methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death.”
It is possible that using hand sanitizer contaminated with methanol can lead to the absorption of toxins through the skin.
1-Propanol Poisoning from Hand Sanitizer
Ingestion of 1-propanol can cause central nervous system (CNS) depression, which can result in death.
“Symptoms of 1-propanol exposure can include confusion, decreased consciousness, and slowed pulse and breathing,” says the FDA.
Call Poison Control If a Child or Anyone Else Has Ingested Hand Sanitizer
While ingestion of any hand sanitizer product could lead to sickness or poisoning, the two unintended toxic ingredients listed above have much more serious — potentially deadly — consequences. Those most at risk include young children, especially toddlers, as well as any adolescents or adults who might drink hand sanitizer as a recreational alcohol substitute.
If anyone you know has ingested a hand sanitizer product, regardless of whether it has been recalled, you are urged to call their local poison control center and make preparations for a possible emergency room visit.
